Since having a baby the style of exercise I enjoy doing has changed vastly, along with my bodies capabilities, and I have (finally) been listening.
Before baby I would go hard, four to five days a week at the gym. Lifting heaving, doing high intensity workouts, smashing protein shakes…and, I am not going to lie, I loved the way I felt and looked. Summer body come at me.
Fast forward 2 years…
Post baby, I was determined to lose the weight. I felt such a loathing for my soft belly and back rolls and those extra kg’s. My self talk was absolutely shocking and is something I am still working on.
I tried to get back into the same exercise I used to do, however, after a stressful birth and ongoing issues, my cortisol levels were high and I just wasn’t enjoying it. To be honest, I would be mid HIIT class and just feel like crying. Plus my lower back was yelling at me “slow down woman!”
So finally, about 9 months post baby, I listened. I decided to focus on healing my body, re-training my muscles slowly and working on my mind and body at the same time. I let go of the negative self talk and reminded myself weight loss was a journey and that Hank and my sanity were more important.
Enter Reformer Pilates – specifically Studio Pilates.
It is hard, it is slow, it is controlled, it is strong, it is life changing.
Life changing is a big call…but I am going to make it! After slogging it out at the gym post baby and seeing NO changes. After about 10 classes I DID notice a difference. My waist was making an appearance, my thigh muscles were getting stronger…BUT the biggest thing for me was my back was no longer hurting.
I have been to a few pilates studios, but I really love Studio Pilates – Coorparoo Brisbane. The instructors are amazing, kind, knowledgable and make you feel like you can do it all even if you are a beginner – I am woman hear me roar!
Now I am not going to lie to you I do still love to crack a sweat and I know how good it is for your heart health, so while I did move away from HIIT classes, I never gave up on Spin classes.
Enter InspireCycle. Hold onto your hats ladies and gents, these guys don’t play around (yes I thought I was going to die during my first ride…but I made it).
The music is pumping, the room is dark, it’s hot and it’s a bloody lot of fun! It will shred those kg’s.
And finally, I have just stepped back onto my matt – yoga matt that is!
Having done yoga on and off for years, I really let it slip post baby. Why I am not sure. I know how good it is for me and I aim to live yoga in my daily life, but I was just so focused on shedding the weight, I forgot to give back to my yin!
I have always had a more masculine energy, I am busy, I am strong and I am often a support for others. I realised I needed to give back to my yin side; my feminine (sounds weird saying that considering I just had a baby).
Yoga is allowing me to drop into the magic of the human form, of what my body is capable of and what I did to grow and birth and raise Hank. It is also allowing me to quiet the mind and remain still, even if only for 1 hour.
Since going back to work, something called me back to my favourite yoga studio – Inna Bliss in Camp Hill. Clearly something has shifted internally and I am acknowledging the need to slow, to calm and to remain present.
Since birthing Hank I have lost over 11kgs but you know what that is not important, what is important is that I have found what works for me, what works for Hank and my husband and what is making me a better mother and person!
Om shanti shanti shanti
